Building Wraps 101: What They Are and When to Use One

Oversized exterior graphics on the side of a building. High impact, real engineering, real permitting. Here's the playbook.

A building wrap is the largest graphic medium most brands ever invest in. Done right, the impressions-per-dollar number rivals top-tier OOH. Done wrong, it's a permitting headache that goes up late and comes down early.

What counts as a building wrap

Generally: any exterior graphic over 200 sq ft installed on a building's facade or attached structure. Smaller installs are 'oversized signage'; larger are 'environmental graphics'. The middle band — typically single-story to 4-story commercial buildings — is the building-wrap sweet spot.

Material choice

Mesh vinyl is the default for any wind-exposed install. Air passes through, reducing wind load on the structure. Solid vinyl is used for fully-supported installs (against scaffold backing or rigid panels) where graphic continuity is more important than wind permeability. Both are UV-rated for 5–7 years.

Engineering and permits

Anything over 1 story requires structural engineering review and a permitted install. Vegas-area building wraps need permits from the relevant jurisdiction (Las Vegas, Henderson, Clark County, or unincorporated areas). Lead time is 2–4 weeks for permits — start early.

Install access

Install is the expensive part. Scaffold rental ($2,000–$15,000+ depending on building height), scissor or boom lifts, or rope-access installers all factor in. Plan install access at the same time as the print.

Worth it?

On Strip-adjacent commercial properties or other high-traffic locations, the cost-per-impression often beats billboards. For low-visibility properties or short campaigns, the install cost can outweigh the impression value. Run the math on traffic counts before committing.
